Revenue stamp on a rent receipt

Many employers send back cash rent receipts that have no revenue stamp. It costs one rupee, but you need to know when it is asked for and how to put it on.

What the rule says

Under the stamp law, a receipt for money above ₹5,000 needs a revenue stamp. The usual stamp is ₹1. The landlord sticks it on the receipt and signs across it, so the stamp cannot be taken off and used again.

Stamp duty is partly decided by each state, and there are exemptions, so the exact rule can differ where you live. In practice, employers ask for the stamp on cash rent receipts above ₹5,000. When rent is paid by cheque, UPI or bank transfer, the bank record is the proof and most employers do not insist on a stamp. If your employer's policy says otherwise, follow it.

Above ₹5,000UPI, cheque, bank transferUsually not asked; check your employer's rules

Example: rent ₹12,000 a month paid in cash from April to March. All twelve receipts need a ₹1 revenue stamp, so the landlord needs twelve stamps and twelve signatures across them.

How to put it on

  1. Print the receipts. The maker on this site draws a box marked "Revenue stamp" on every receipt where the rent is in cash and above ₹5,000.
  2. Stick a ₹1 revenue stamp in the box.
  3. The landlord signs so the signature runs across the stamp and onto the paper.
  4. Scan or photograph the signed pages if your employer takes proofs online.

Where to get revenue stamps

Head post offices usually sell them, and so do many stamp vendors near courts and tehsil offices. Buy a sheet for the whole year at once.
